John Kay has been practicing law in Illinois for over 32 years. Since 1992, he has devoted his career to family law, focusing on complex divorce and custody matters. With decades of experience, John combines strategic advocacy with a personalized approach to help clients navigate one of the most challenging periods of their lives.
Known for his skill in the courtroom and his dedication to client service, John is respected by clients, opposing counsel, and judges throughout the Chicagoland area. His practice encompasses a broad range of family law issues—from high-net-worth divorces and business valuations to contested custody matters and post-judgment litigation. John has also helped many clients with the drafting, preparation, and negotiation of both prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, ensuring that their financial interests are protected and clearly defined.
John takes a common-sense, cost-effective approach to his family law practice, always keeping litigation expenses in mind while working to meet his clients’ goals. He is a firm believer in pursuing outcomes that make both legal and financial sense, and he strongly advises clients against pursuing issues that are unlikely to be cost-effective or productive. His practical mindset helps clients stay focused on the big picture while achieving outcomes that support their long-term well-being.
Whether negotiating favorable settlements or pursuing litigation, John is committed to achieving the best possible result. In addition to his litigation work, he is a certified divorce mediator and has been on the Lake County approved list of mediators for the past five years. He has successfully helped many parties resolve their divorce cases without the need for trial. John brings the same collaborative mindset he uses in mediation to all of his divorce cases, often helping clients find creative, tailored solutions that minimize conflict and promote long-term stability.
“I practice family law because I believe in guiding clients through a difficult transition with honesty, care, and resolve,” says John. “Every case is unique, and I take the time to understand each client’s priorities so I can provide strategic advice and compassionate advocacy at every step.”
John is also known for his accessibility and strong communication. “One of the most common frustrations I hear from new clients is that they couldn’t get a hold of their previous attorney. I make it a point to maintain open and consistent communication—and that’s something we emphasize at HRKA.”
John resides in the suburbs of Chicago with his wife, a prominent psychologist. He is proud of his two adult daughters, who are now pursuing their own paths. He received his undergraduate degree in Communications from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and his Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School.
